Police in Dong Nai province have arrested two young men in relation to the murder of 26-year-old Bui Van Liem, a gay man, on December 24 over a money conflict.
Tran Tu Dien, 23, of Bac Lieu province, and Ngo Van Tam, 20, of Tra Vinh province, were arrested on December 26, two days after killing Liem, a native of Ben Tre province, while he was sleeping in the rented house they shared.
The three were stevedores at an animal feed processing company in the Bien Hoa Industrial Park and lived together in a rented house in An Binh Ward.
Liem had homosexual relations with Tam and he once promised that after he sold a lot of land in his home town, he would give Tam VND500 million (US$24,000).
Tam later asked Liem many times about the money, but Liem refused to give it to Tam for different reasons.
A few days before Christmas, Tam requested that Liem give him the money so that he could pay for medical treatment for his girlfriend, but Liem rejected the request.
Angry with Liem, Tam recruited Dien to help him kill Liem.
At 11:00 pm on Christmas Day, Dien and Tam killed Liem with two knives and then cut his body into pieces, which they later packed into 2 bags.
They initially wanted to throw the bags into a river nearby, but after finding the streets crowded with travellers celebrating Christmas, they later threw them into a canal 500 meters from the rented house.
The next morning, local residents who went out for exercise found the bags and reported them to police.
After investigation, the police seized Tam when he was working in Bien Hoa city on December 26. From Tam’s confession, the police arrested Dien later the same day.
