The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has submitted to the Government for approval an eight-year project to protect the nation's elephant population.
The VND257 billion (US$12.3 million) project, carried out until 2020, will focus on preserving and restoring the elephants' habitat, especially in three national parks: Pu Mat in central Nghe An Province; Yok Don in the Tay Nguyen (Central Highland) province of Dak Lak; and Cat Tien in southern Dong Nai Province.
The project hopes that by 2020, each elephant herd in the country would have increased its strength by three to six members.
