Killer robbers tried, one gets death

The Dong Nai Province People’s Court yesterday opened a trial for four gangsters who committed robberies that killed 3 people, including a police officer, and injured 4 others within less than 2 months.

The Dong Nai Province People’s Court yesterday opened a trial for four gangsters who committed robberies that killed 3 people, including a police officer, and injured 4 others within less than 2 months. 

Bui Van Trung, 23, of Dong Nai Province’s Bien Hoa city, got a death sentence while Nguyen Hoang Manh, 25, was sentenced to life imprisonment and Trinh Cong Vung, 23, received 25 years in prison on charges of murder and robbery.

Meanwhile, the other defendant, Pham Huu Thinh, 24, was sentenced to 5 years in jail for not reporting crimes and consuming assets acquired by criminals.

Along with these four robbers, the gang had one more member named Tuan who had been shot down by police after Tuan shot dead a 26-year-old police officer, Le Thanh Tam, in a gunfight in a robbery conducted by them in Dong Nai Province on July 19, 2011.

According to the indictment, from May 29 to July 19, 2011, the gang committed four robberies in Dong Nai, Thanh Hoa and Dak Lak provinces, attacking 7 people; three of them died.

On May 29 Tuan killed a man from whom he bought a gun by stabbing him 14 times with a knife in Dak Lak.

Another case occurred on June 8, when Tuan and Trung robbed a motorbike and money from a couple who were travelling on a street in Thanh Hoa City. They cause serious injuries to the victims.

One month later, on July 8, Tuan, Trung , Vung and Manh attacked two men and robbed a SH scooter in Dong Nai Province. Tuan shot dead one of the two.

They then sold the vehicle to Thinh for VND46 million (US$2,200).
