A 23-year-old man from Dong Nai Province has been sentenced to death for his involvement in the killing of a police officer last year.

The Dong Nai Province's People's Court sentenced Bui Van Trung, a resident of Dong Nai's Bien Hoa City, for his participation in the killing of the officer as well as four robberies.

On July 19, 2011, Trung and Tran Quoc Tuan of Dong Nai Province were stopped by local traffic police for breaking the law while driving a motorbike. Tuan shot and injured a police officer with a K59 gun.

He and Trung fled the scene and later stopped a motorbike driver. After robbing him, Tuan shot and injured the driver.

Tuan then tried to rob a farmer by threatening him with the gun.

Police officer Le Thanh Tam, 26, of the Cam My District Police, who had arrived on the scene after being notified of the earlier incidents, was shot and killed by Tuan. Tuan continued to fire the gun until other police showed up and killed him.

Several hours later, police captured Trung, who had been hiding under a culvert.
