Nearly 7,000 people have been killed and more than 25,000 others injured in 23,619 traffic accidents since early this year.
The National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) said the total number of accidents showed a decline of nearly 9,500 cases with the death and injury toll reduced by 1,502 and 11,000, respectively.
While five major provinces and cities boast of a sharp drop in traffic accidents, Dong Nai, Bac Lieu, Kon Tum, Thua Thien-Hue, Bac Kan and Lao Cai continued seeing a sudden increase in the number of traffic accidents and deaths.
Hanoi and HCM city are two biggest cities which have implemented strict and comprehensive measures to reduce traffic jams, such as changing working and studying hours, allowing parking in certain areas and banning some private vehicles from running in the streets.
Despite such efforts, 394 people have been killed by traffic accidents in Hanoi and 497 people in HCM City since early this year.
At an online meeting with provincial and municipal leaders on September 26, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who is also NTSC chairman, said the number of traffic accidents and deaths have declined across the country, but this is an issue of public concern.
He urged all provinces, cities and relevant agencies to take effective measures to reduce traffic accidents on way or another.
