The Dong Nai Province People's Committee has decided to move nearly 600 polluting firms to dedicated industrial areas to stop the pollution of the Dong Nai River.
The river, which runs through 12 provinces, is the main source of water for 16 million people living in its basin, including HCM City, but has become severely polluted, especially in the dry season, the General Department of Environment said.
Millions of cubic metres of untreated wastewater flow into it each day from households and factories in the basin, with factories in Dong Nai, Tay Ninh, Binh Phuoc, and HCM City being the worst offenders.
HCM City, realising that factories pollute rivers, has moved 1,260 of them to industrial clusters since 2003.
Fifteen export processing zones, industrial parks, and high-tech parks in the city are equipped with wastewater treatment systems.
Many hope Tay Ninh and Binh Phuoc will follow suit to save the Dong Nai River.
