Sonadezi Long Thanh discharged poorly treated, stinking wastewater into Ba Cheo canal |
So far, nearly 300 farming households in Tam An and Tam Phuoc communes in Long Thanh district have filed complaints asking Sonadezi to pay a total compensation of some VND19 billion, said Dong Nai Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
Earlier, HCM City-based Institute of Environment and Resources concluded that the Sonadezi Long Thanh had polluted over 16 percent of Ba Cheo canal’s 682.8-hectare area.
The pollution also killed 95 percent of the local aquaculture, and affected local poultry between 2008 and 2011.
Meanwhile, how much damage the plant has caused to crops and breeding grounds has yet to be determined.
Recently, the compensation board met about the issue and it is expected that a compensation plan will be available by the end of the second quarter of this year.
