The upgrading of alumina transport routes is being implemented too slowly and they may not be completed in time for the test-run of the Tan Rai alumina factory in Bao Lam District, Lam Dong Province in June.
Truong Huu Hiep, director of Lam Dong Province’s Department of Transport, told the Daily that the Provincial Road 725 upgrade project from the plant to National Highway 20, stretching nearly 18 kilometers, was scheduled for completion in September. However, Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) has yet to allocate capital for contractors to execute it, he said.
If capital is not allocated soon, the project will stall and it won’t ensure the start of the alumina transport in June as scheduled, Hiep said.
Although work started on National Highway 20 last December, the design of the project is being adjusted, and the upgrade will not be completed until late 2014.
Provincial Road 769 linking National Highway 20 with Go Dau Port in Dong Nai Province has also still not kicked off.
An official of Dong Nai Province’s Department of Transport told the Daily that this project was awaiting capital from Vinacomin to get started.
Under the upgrade project of alumina transport routes of Directorate for Roads of Vietnam, the transport of alumina from the Tan Rai alumina factory will follow Provincial 725, National Highway 20, Provincial 769 and National Highway 51 to Go Dau Port for a total length of 210 kilometers.
The upgrade of National Highway 20 will be conducted under build-transfer (BT) and is worth a combined VND4.467 trillion, while Vinacomin will pay over VND400 billion for the upgrade of the two provincial roads.
