Infectious diseases on the rise in Dong Nai

Doctors at Dong Nai Paediatrics Hospital take care a child with dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome 

A total of 869 cases of dengue fever with one death have been reported across Dong Nai province since the beginning of this year, according to the Provincial Preventive Medicine Centre. This figure represented an  increase of over 50 per cent from the same period last year.

Dr. Vo Xuan Lieu, Deputy Director of the Provincial Preventive Medicine Centre said that Dong Nai witnessed a sharp increase in the number of dengue cases before peak transmission season. The centre also forcasts that the disease will spread further and the number of cases will increase significantly during peak dengue transmission (September and October).

Dr. Lieu also warned of increased risk of malaria in the province. A total of 265 malaria cases have been reported in Dong Nai since the beginning of this year but no fatal case of this disease was recorded.

There was always a rise in the number of infectious diseases at this time of the year. Young children are particularly at risk of contracting respiratory diseases, rubella … at this time of year. Dong Nai Paediatrics Hospital reported 2,500 children got outpatient treatment while 700-800 others received inpatient treatment per day at peak days.

Doctors said that all those over six months old should be vaccinated against common infectious diseases and local residents should immediately seek medical attention if they developed a high temperature, fatigue, pains and other health problems.
