Two baby rhinos, a male and a female, were born this month in the care of Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc in Kien Giang Province.

The successful reproduction has raised the total number of rhinos at the safari reserve to 19, noted a safari representative.

One baby white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) was born on April 20. The species is mainly found in north-east and southern Africa and is among five rare rhino species.

The other baby rhino, named Hakuna Matata, was born on April 3.

They are among the first three baby rhinos to be born in the country in the past decade.

The white rhinoceros species can easily reproduce in natural habitats, but this rarely happens in captivity. In Southeast Asia, since 1973, only 10 white rhinos have been born at Sing Zoo in Singapore and four others have been born in Malaysia-based Taman Safari.

The successful reproduction of two baby white rhinos within 17 days of each other demonstrates that Vinpearl Safari is an ideal habitat for wildlife.

Vinpearl Safari has received good news in other areas as well. Black-necked swan chicks were successfully hatched at Vinpearl Safari Nam Hoi An on March 2 this year. This species requires strict conditions to be able to incubate and hatch eggs.

Since last year, Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc has welcomed some 370 wild baby animals born at the zoo. Meanwhile, one year after being put into operation, Vinpearl Safari Nam Hoi An has welcomed almost 100 new babies, including many rare and endangered species of rhinos, hippos, Bengal tigers and ring-tailed lemurs.
