The 3-level flood warning system was created by two female high school students – Hoang Thi Dieu Huyen and Phan Thi Minh Trang - in Quang Dien district, the ‘flooding hub’ of Thua Thien-Hue province.
In the flood season, Quang Dien often becomes inundated with water.
Huyen and Trang from Ngo The Lan School understand the severe consequences locals have to incur in the rainy and stormy season.
In the digital era, people get information about rains and floods from radio, TV and internet. However, the problem is that the information channels give weather forecasts periodically at fixed times.
In many cases, when floods rush down, electricity is interrupted and people cannot access information channels.
The two students wanted to develop a warning system which works all day and night and can send alarms at any time.
The system gives alarms depending on the danger level of floods. There are three alarm levels, with the third being the highest.
The system has a frame made of wood, 3 swivel lamps, one homemade touch-sensitive switch and one pause button. It is connected with buoys set in accordance with three alarm levels 1, 2 and 3. The power is from a battery.
When the water level rises to alarm level 1, all three buoys will rise, but only one buoy gives an alarm, while the others don’t bear an impact, and the warning lamp lights up. It will send an alarm at level 1.
When the alarm 3 is sent, people will understand they need to evacuate immediately.
According to Trang, the advantage of the warning system is the low production cost. The devices needed to assemble the system cost VND800,000. It has a simple structure and is easy to operate.
Since the system is compact, it can be easily installed at rivers, lakes, streams and at positions from which alarms can be heard.
For their efforts, the two students received the consolation prize at the 2017 Thua Thien-Hue provincial creativity competition for young people.
