Microsoft today reiterated its commitment to continue to grow its presence in Vietnam and contribute to building a first-class information technology infrastructure in the country at the “The Microsoft Cloud for Your Business” conference in Hanoi.

Speaking at the conference, Vu Minh Tri, general director of Microsoft Vietnam emphasised the transformational role of technology in accelerating the development of emerging nations such as Vietnam.

“Microsoft’s bold ambition is to reinvent productivity to empower every organisation, every enterprise and every person on the planet to do more and achieve more. In speaking with business and IT leaders in Vietnam, I am heartened to see the hunger to harness technology to help propel the country to the global stage,” Tri said. “I am confident that Microsoft can match the ambitions of Vietnamese people by providing cloud-optimised and secure technology solutions, software, services and devices to accelerate innovation, enrich education and drive entrepreneurship.”

Microsoft has been in Vietnam for more than 15 years now, where it has steadily built its presence to serve Vietnamese customers, as well as a strategic base of operations, where it currently employs more than 10,000 staff. Its new Microsoft Mobile Devices factory in the northern province of Bac Ninh ships millions of Windows devices globally.

Microsoft has recently signed a series of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Ministry of Finance and  other government agencies to implement common objectives including IT infrastructure modernisation, privacy and internet security enhancement, cloud computing application development, and IT skills development for Vietnam.

Joe Wilson, general manager for WorldWide Field Evangelism at Microsoft addressed the importance of a cloud-optimised IT infrastructure in Vietnam. “The foundation for a connected society and economy starts with a modern IT infrastructure that is cloud-optimised, scalable and highly secure. Microsoft is excited and honored to be playing an integral part in helping Vietnam build a world-class cloud-based IT economy,” he said.

One example is through Microsoft Azure, which is a cloud computing platform and infrastructure that enables organisations to build, deploy and manage applications and services through Microsoft’s global network of managed datacenters.

Showcasing the cross-platform capabilities of Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, Microsoft announced that it has worked with Sacombank to develop the Sacombank eShop application allowing mobile Android, iOS or Windows Phone customers to shop for products and services anytime and anywhere. The application lets customers get deals and order products and services from all merchants in the network, earn reward points and trade them for goods at these merchants or exchange them for cash.

Nguyen Huu Phuc, director of Sacombank’s Card Center said: “Sacombank eShop, first launched in Vietnam, is an e-commerce solution bringing practical benefits that help customers save travel cost and time while quickly shop for goods, services wherever they want. I believe that, with services and benefits Sacombank eShop offers, customers will be satisfied with totally different experiences.”

Another example of the importance of cloud computing in driving innovation is Microsoft’s collaboration with the Software Development Centre (SDC) of the University of Danang to develop SmartBook. This involves a cloud-based Office 365 education notebook that will enable new learning experiences for students and teachers beyond the traditional classrooms, where they can be more productive, creative and collaborative anytime and anywhere.

“We need cutting-edge tools to grow our students into world-class talents. With cloud-based solutions such as Office 365, students and teachers now can be unshackled from the classroom to learn in the real world. We are excited about how technology is transforming the learning environment at the University of Danang,” Trinh Cong Duy, vice director of SDC said.

During the conference, Microsoft also reiterated its commitment to help local developers and IT companies create solutions and applications for a digital world, as well as helping train more IT-skilled professionals in Vietnam.

Today, Vietnam is a shining example of Microsoft’s efforts in building a strong developer ecosystem in Asia Pacific, where Vietnam has more than 4,000 active Windows Phone developers and are contributing more than 40 per cent of developer activities in the region.

The soon to be released new Windows Operating System, Windows 10, will also bring an unprecedented opportunity for Vietnamese developers. Windows 10 adapts to the devices customers are using — from PCs to phones to tablets and tiny gadgets — and what they’re doing with a consistent, familiar and compatible experience, enabling even greater productivity.

Microsoft is delivering a converged application platform for developers on all devices with a unified app store. Developers will be able to write an application once and deploy it easily across multiple device types, making discovery, purchase and updating easier than ever for customers.
