Viettel rolls out mobile service for ethnic minorities

Mobile carrier Viettel has introduced a prepaid plan dedicated to members of ethnic minority groups, who currently do not have access to mobile phone services.

The plan called “Buon lang” (Village) aims to deliver quality wireless coverage to over 12 million ethnic people, only one fourth of which are currently on line.

The operator said that this is the first time the help desk service is available in native languages of ethnic minorities including Thai, Tay, Nung, H’Mong, Dao, Jarai, Khmer and Ede.
 
Vice Chairman of the Government Committee for Ethnic Affairs Hoang Xuan Luong praised the company for its great efforts in bringing telecommunications technology to ethnic regions while maintaining local people’s language and culture.
 
On this occasion, Viettel presented 500 suites of solar-powered lamps and chargers for ethnic people in areas unconnected to the national electricity grid.
 
Viettel, one of the three major mobile carriers in Vietnam, boasts the widest mobile coverage with 56,600 2G and 3G stations across the country.
