VN, UK boost cooperation in nuclear energy

A seminar entitled, “Boosting cooperation in nuclear energy between Vietnam and UK ” took place in Hanoi on Feb. 16.

A seminar entitled, “Boosting cooperation in nuclear energy between Vietnam and UK ” took place in Hanoi on Feb. 16.

The seminar was held by the Ministry of Science and Technology in coordination with the UK-Southeast Asia Partners in Science and the UK Embassy in Vietnam.

Deputy Science and Technology Minister Le Dinh Tien said Vietnam is aware that developing nuclear power is a complex task, requiring a strong system of law, infrastructure, human resources, technology and huge financial resources. These factors present difficulties and challenges for aspiring nuclear power nations like Vietnam .

Tien said information and experiences from the seminar will help policymakers, investors, managers and experts of Vietnam to learn from this experience and apply knowledge during the implementation of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project.

He said that the seminar is expected to open up opportunities for cooperation between the two countries in the field.

UK Ambassador to Vietnam Antony Stokes stressed the importance of cooperation in nuclear energy between the two countries and expressed his wish that the two sides will continue cooperating in expanding initiatives on nuclear energy safety.

At the seminar, UK experts exchanged experiences in building nuclear legal framework, preparation of sites for construction of nuclear power plants, selecting technology, building research capacity, technical assistance for nuclear power programmes, developing human resources, management of risks in construction and operation of nuclear power plants.
