Hanoi Telecom Corporation is seeking Ministry of Information and Communications intervention so that it can acquire half of the third generation (3G) bandwidth held by EVN Telecom.
The move came after Viettel announced its intention to acquire EVN Telecom. Earlier Hanoi Telecom sent the Government and related agencies its proposal to take over the struggling EVN Telecom.
Hanoi Telecom asked the information ministry, the 3G license issuing agency and telecom infrastructure administrator, for help in its bid for half of the 3G bandwidth owned by EVN Telecom. Hanoi Telecom and EVN Telecom are currently sharing the same 3G frequency.
In its previous document sent to the Government, Hanoi Telecom said that if it got approval for EVN Telecom acquisition, the deal would be good for the loss-making telco’s foreign partner Hutchison Telecom. This is because Hutchison Telecom is Hanoi Telecom’s current partner in the Vietnamobile network.
Hutchison is concerned the telecom market is now dominated by a few state-owned telecom conglomerates and if the situation worsened, smaller telecom firms would be at a disadvantage.
Hanoi Telecom general director Trinh Minh Chau said if the firm failed to take over the half bandwidth from EVN Telecom, it would find it difficult to deploy 3G services with only its half bandwidth.
It is likely that Hanoi Telecom’s 3G network would be aborted while billions of dollars has been invested in the Vietnamobile network.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh said the Government has yet to make a final decision on the fate of EVN Telecom.
Speaking to the Daily on the sidelines of the National Assembly meeting on Thursday, Ninh said he had not received the second petition from Hanoi Telecom.
If EVN Telecom was acquired by another party, Hanoi Telecom would have trouble deploying its 3G services.
The military-run telecom firm Viettel said it would restructure EVN Telecom if its acquisition request was approved.
