In order to improve the Circles friend-grouping function on Google+, Google has acquired social networking software company Katango, which was co-founded by Dr. Vu Duy Thuc of Vietnam.
Vu Duy Thuc, Yoav Shoham of Israel, and Michael Munie of the United States founded the company one year ago. Katango has recently launched its first iPhone application and Web application.
Katango's software automatically sorts users' Facebook friends and iPhone contacts into groups, using an algorithm that analyzes a variety of data and online interactions.
"In the earliest days of Google+, I alluded to the fact that we had big plans for Circles. Are you ready for some magic in your Circles? These folks are magicians!," wrote Google Vice President of Products Bradley Horowitz on his Google+ profile.
Vu Duy Thuc became one of the first young Vietnamese to earn a PhD at California’s Stanford University, where he completed his Information Technology (IT) thesis in 2010, at the age of 28.
Thuc has conducted more than ten research works in international magazines since his sophomore year, and he won first prize in a computer competition for senior high school students in Vietnam and the United States.
Thuc was also awarded the title of “Excellent Student” by the Computing Research Association, and his achievements at Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, ensured that his name was cemented on the school’s honorary board.
