EVN Telecom's entire fibre-optic infrastructure system and its other telecommunications infrastructure should be handed over to other major groups to be exploited more effectively, the company suggested in its proposal.

If approved, the deal would create more favourable conditions for Ha Noi Telecom, a young telecommunications enterprise, to accelerate its development and better enhance its presence in the domestic telecommunications market which is currently dominated by MobiFone, Vinaphone and Viettel.

Representatives from Ha Noi Telecom were not available yesterday for further comment on the proposed deal.

Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Le Nam Thang previously said that it was time to merge EVN Telecom with another State-owned network operator.

Experts in the telecommunications industry alleged that Viettel was the only company capable of reviving EVN Telecom because of its financial capacity and experience. That merger would also enjoy simplified legal procedures as both were State-owned enterprises, they said.

However, there was no signal or information about the merger from EVN leaders, said an anonymous EVN Telecom official.

EVN Telecom, a subsidiary of the Viet Nam Electricity Group (EVN), has been suffering considerable losses and debt due to connection fees and frequency charges.
