While other Vietnamese businesses complain about big difficulties, Vietnamese software firms still can earn big money from the software outsourcing contracts signed with foreign partners.
Software firms all say that 2011 is really a prosperous year for them, while the market is getting better. A lot of them fulfilled their 2011 business plan right at the end of the third quarter. Meanwhile, they have got new long term big projects.
2011 better than expected
According to Ngo Van Toan, Deputy General Director of Global CyberSoft (GCS), the situation turns out to be better than expected. In the first 8 months of the year, GCS saw the revenue increasing by 40 percent in comparison with the same period of the last year, while it had fulfilled 70 percent of the yearly business plan.
Ngo Hung Phuong, General Director of CSC Vietnam, also said that the number of software engineers of the company has increased by 30 percent to 800.
Meanwhile, by the end of July, TMA Solutions had got 1000 engineers, an increase of 20 percent over the previous year, while it hopes to have 1200 software engineers by the end of 2011. Nguyen Huu Le, TMA’s Chair, said that the company needs more engineers to fulfill the contracts signed with foreign partners. He has revealed that the company has got new clients from Australia and Europe, while the North American market has been stable.
LogiGear now needs more workers for its two main projects. It has opened the central region’s office to recruit more workers, while it hopes that the number of engineers would be 600 instead of 400.
Vietnamese companies now can meet the strict requirements of projects with hundreds of engineers in every field. GCS, which has advantages in automation and has been keen on the Japanese market, now is also developing software solution for a satellite telecom network of a client in North America, using 100 engineers, while the number continues rising. The company is also focusing on other fields, such as the embedded system.
As for CSC, besides the two main fields which have been its biggest advantages over the last 10 years, it has been gathering strength on the project to develop solutions for Jurich, using nearly 100 engineers for the project to last many years.
According to Phuong, the percentages in the growth rate are not the most important thing. The noteworthy thing is that Vietnamese companies now can meet strict requirements in providing solutions to industries, while they not only simply do the outsourcing.
Phuong said that in the global outsourcing industry, maintenance services bring 70 percent of the total value, while the software development only can bring 30 percent. Therefore, Vietnamese firms need to have the staff who have good English skills, deep knowledge about industries, have the capability to give advices to clients, while the staff of outsourcing companies need to be available to give support to clients 24 hours per day.
Le of TMA Solutions also said that the projects outsourced to Vietnam now require higher techniques, while Vietnamese companies have grown up enough to satisfy the requirements. Especially, Vietnamese companies now can obtain more contracts because they have been better known in the world market, even though the cheap labor force has become no more the advantage of Vietnamese companies.
“Most importantly, Vietnamese engineers now can join high quality projects, while they not only serve as “information technology workers” any more,” Le said.
More new markets
Vietnamese enterprises have learned the lessons from the crisis, and they now tend to diversify markets to disperse risks. CSC, for example, which has been keen on the US market, has been trying to develop the European and Australian markets.
FPT Software, which has loyal clients from Japan, once met big difficulties after the earthquake in Japan in March 2011. However, the company still had fulfilled 70 percent of the yearly business plan. Since FPT Software has been targeting the European and US markets, it still believes that the 30 percent growth rate target in 2011 is within reach.
