The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 27 held a meeting to celebrate the diplomatic sector’s 70th anniversary.

Speaking at the event, President Truong Tan Sang asked the diplomatic sector to prioritize national interests, comply with the Party’s guidelines and policies, and follow President Ho Chi Minh’s diplomatic thoughts in a flexible manner.

“The diplomatic sector must pursue a foreign policy of independence, self determination, peace, cooperation and development, deepening relations with major countries, neighboring countries while deliberately fighting against interference into internal affairs, national sovereignty and independence violation to ensure national political stability and territorial integrity. Disputes at sea must be resolved by peaceful means based on international law and regional code of conducts,” he said.

President Truong Tan Sang highlighted the sector’s substantial dedication over the past 30 years of “doi moi” (renewal), saying that while Vietnam had diplomatic relations with only 11 countries in 1954, it has set up official ties with 185 countries and promoted economic, trade and investment cooperation with 224 markets around the globe.

The country has maintained sound relations with all world powers, including five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, he noted, adding that it has also enhanced international integration and participated in more than 500 bilateral and multilateral agreements in a variety of fields. It has also actively played its role at important multilateral and economic forums in the region and the world.

The diplomatic sector was conferred with the Gold Star Order for the second time on this occasion.
