Vietnam and Italy should fully tap their cooperation potential in the areas of mutual concern so as to boost bilateral economic and trade ties.

The agreement was reached during talks in Hanoi on January 6 between Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam National Assembly, and Marina Sereni, Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian parliament.

They said their legislative bodies support the two governments in signing new cooperation agreements and oversee them implement these agreements effectively.

They underlined the need for increased exchange of delegations between their legislative bodies and friendship parliamentary groups to share experience in legislation.

Ngan and Sereni agreed the Vietnam National Assembly and the Italian parliament will consult each other about international issues of common concern and increase coordination at inter-parliamentary forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly and the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting (ASEP).

Ngan invited the Italian parliamentary speaker to visit Vietnam and attend the 132nd IPU General Assembly in Hanoi in 2015.

NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung (R) told his Italian guest that Vietnam-Italy relations have developed well since their strategic partnership was established in January 2013.

At a later reception for the visiting Italian legislator, Vietnam National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung appreciated the outcome of the talks, and noted the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Italy, established during Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s Rome visit a year ago, created plenty of opportunity for the two countries to deepen their cooperation.

He thanked Italy for coordinating with Vietnam in successfully organising the Vietnam Year in Italy in 2013, cementing the two nations. He proposed strengthening economic cooperation, especially in the areas of their strength.

Sereni expressed her hope both sides create favourable conditions for their business circles to increase contact and establish partnerships.

While receiving Sereni the same day, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan stressed Vietnam and Italy have made great strides in economic and trade ties, as well as in cooperation between their small and medium businesses.

Two-way trade last year hit more than US$3 billion, and several Italia businesses are operating efficiently in Vietnam.

She thanked Italy for supporting Vietnamese nationals in residing, working and studying in their country of residence.

For her part, Sereni said both sides need to boost ties between their State, legislative and government agencies, and expand cooperation in economics, investment, education, and culture to promote mutual understanding.
