Viet Nam joined Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia at the third ministerial meeting on tourism and culture co-operation, held in the Lao city of Vientiane on Saturday.
Delegates agreed that tourism co-operation among ASEAN countries had been highly effective. The development of cultural heritage tourism offered tourists opportunities to both enjoy landscapes and explore culture.
The attendees agreed that it was important to preserve cultural values to enhance the sustainable development of tourism and advocate intensified connectivity between nations.
The Vietnamese delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Vuong Duy Bien, asked the other countries to advertise regional tourism at international forums and exchange tourism management and development experiences.
Lao delegates said the Buddhist culture in the region was one area for potential tourism development.
Other areas in need of development, they said, included partnerships between the State and private sectors and human resources training for the tourism industry.
That night, the six countries also presented their cultural identities through arts performances at Laos' That Luang festival.
