State President Truong Tan Sang attended the APEC CEO Summit 2012, met with foreign leaders and joined the Vietnam-Russia roundtable discussion on trade and investment in the Far East on first day of the APEC Summit Week, September 7.

The CEO Summit is taking place from September 7-8 in Russia and has attracted more than 700 chief executives of major companies in the Asia-Pacific region.

Twenty two rounds of discussions during the Summit will focus on long-term prospects for regional and global integration, sustainable growth and new challenges facing trade and investment liberalization, as well as eliminating trade and investment barriers for small and medium-sized enterprises, and establishing reliable supply chains.

The CEO Summit sessions will concentrate on issues that are most relevant at this stage in APEC's evolution, including globalization, energy security and human resources as the key elements for economic development.

President Sang is one of the ten APEC leaders to deliver a speech on water resources security, which is a major topic of APEC cooperation and of particular interest to business circles.

Water is becoming a scarce and strategic natural resource around the globe that impacts not only economic development but also the security of many nations and continents. Now is the time to pay full attention to the use, protection and sustainable management of water resources, said Mr Sang.

He also underlined the need to create a mechanism for APEC dialogues on water resources linked to APEC’s new growth strategy.

President Sang and his Chilean counterpart, Sebastian Pinera, praised the role of businesses in research and development to conserve water resources and use them effectively.

They urged businesses to raise their social responsibility and invest in research and technology transfers to ensure the appropriate use of water resources.

Delegates praised Vietnam’s practical contributions to boosting international cooperation in protecting water resources under bilateral sub-regional and regional cooperation frameworks.

At the Vietnam-Russia business roundtable discussion with more than 200 businesses from both countries, President Sang described strongly developing economic and trade ties as a foundation and important impetus for promoting the Vietnam-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership.

Mr Sang spoke highly of the efforts made by the two countries’ businesses to share experiences and seek cooperation opportunities between the Far East and Vietnam.

He also called on them to fully tap their potential and provide mutual support between Vietnam and the Far East to develop economic and trade ties on par with the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia.

At the meeting with representatives from leading US groups on the same day, President Sang affirmed Vietnam’s determination to restructure its national economy and shift its growth model.

US group leaders praised Vietnam’s efforts to maintain macroeconomic stability, control inflation and promote comprehensive international integration.

They said they hope Vietnam’s economic restructuring will offer new opportunities for regional businesses and investors.

Mr Sang and US group leaders exchanged views on business issues related to Vietnam's economic, trade and investment regulations.

President Sang also met with his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao on the sidelines of the APEC Summit 2012 and wished the 18th congress of the Communist Party of China great success.

The two leaders said they will continue fostering the time-honoured friendship between Vietnam and China and deepen the comprehensive Vietnam-China strategic partnership.

They also agreed to strengthen bilateral ties in the future by maintaining exchange visits of senior leaders; improving mutually beneficial cooperation in all fields, especially economics and trade; promoting people-to-people exchanges; and coordinating closely at regional and international forums.

On the issue of the East Sea, President Sang said that both countries need to deal with the situation through peaceful means in line with the basic principles of international laws including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
