Vietnam wants to develop the friendly and cooperative relations with Qatar, says State President Truong Tan Sang.

President Sang made the statement during January 16 talks with the Emir of the State of Qatar, Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, who began a two-day official visit to Hanoi.

The State leader affirmed Vietnam’s foreign policy of being a friend and reliable partner of all countries in the international community.

Vietnam will spare no effort to promote peace, independence and development in the region and the world, he said.

He briefed his guest on Vietnam’s remarkable achievements during its renewal (doi moi) process and spoke highly of Qatar’s positive results in its national construction and development.

Qartar Emir expressed his admiration for Vietnam’s achievements, saying he hopes the Southeast Asian nation will be able to gain even greater results and build a prosperous Vietnam with an increasing role in the international arena.

Both leaders said they were pleased with the development of multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Qatar and reaffirmed their determination to boost the relations in the future, especially in trade, investment, agriculture, labour, tourism, education and training.

They shared the view that two-way trade between Vietnam and Qatar remains modest, standing at US$200 million in 2011, of which US$16 million came from Vietnamese exports.

Vietnam imports petrochemical products, plastic materials and chemicals from Qatar and exports seafood, electrical cables, wood products, china, construction glass, automobile spare parts, fruits and vegetables.

They also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern and proposed promoting information exchanges and joining efforts for peace, stability, cooperation, and development.

The Emir also invited President Sang to visit Qatar and he accepted with pleasure. The visit will be scheduled through the regular diplomatic channels.

After the talks, both leaders witnessed the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) on cooperation in tertiary education, scientific research, banking, and investment.
