The inauguration ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his Cambodian counterpart Samdech Hunsen, former Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu, former State President Le Duc Anh and senior Vietnamese and Cambodian officials.
Unit 125 is a starting point of Cambodia’s resistance movement prior to the founding of the Cambodian National United Front for National Salvation (CNUFNS) (Dec. 2, 1978), and then stepping forward to abolish the genocidal regime and revive the country.
Unit 125 was established on May 12, 1978 in Long Giao commune, Cam My district, Dong Nai province with Vietnam’s assistance. It was manned by over 200 Cambodian officials and soldiers, led by Hun Sen.
Speaking at the ceremony, PM Hun Sen thanked the Party, Government, army and people of Vietnam, especially Military Zone 7 and Dong Nai province, for their support in building the memorial.
The site helps the next generations be aware of the fraternal relationship and solidarity between Cambodia and Vietnam, he said.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said the Vietnamese people always treasure and remember the images of Cambodian soldiers and people who stood side by side with Vietnamese army and people in the struggle for independence for the two countries.
PM Dung highlighted the significance of the January 7, 1979 victory for Cambodia's existence and subsequent development.
The victory opened a new chapter for Vietnam-Cambodia cooperation and development, he said.
The Government leader said the historical site represents the patriotism of PM Hunsen and the Cambodian soldiers, as well as the mutual affection between the two nations.
Earlier, the two Prime Ministers offered incense in tribute to Cambodian soldiers who fell down at the relic site.
