The first session of 13th National Assembly, scheduled to open on Thursday, will focus on selecting national leaders for the new term, National Assembly Office vice chairman Nguyen Sy Dung told the press yesterday.

The National Assembly would spend 11 out of the first 15 days of the session in selecting the President, Vice President and Prime Minister of Viet Nam, as well as the Chief Judge of the Supreme People's Court, the head of the Supreme People's Procuracy, the Auditor General, and cabinet members.

During the session, the National Assembly would also elect its new chairperson and vice chairpersons as well as members of the Standing Committee, Council of Nationalities, and legislative committees.

National Assembly Office chairman Tran Dinh Dan said the candidates for these positions were people of long experience in a variety of posts, with the talent and virtue to serve the State and the people.

The National Assembly is also scheduled to approve a resolution setting its lawmaking agenda for the remainder of this session, as well as a proposal to amend the Constitution, last altered in 1992.

Dan said that amending the Constitution was vital to reflect the needs of the new revolutionary period. Lawmakers will set up a drafting committee tasked to gather and study opinions from National Assembly deputies before drawing up the proposed amendments.

In its new session, the National Assembly would also hear and discuss the implementation of socio-economic development plans and the State budget in the first six months of this year. Approval of the 2009 budget balance sheet and a resolution on tax reductions and exemptions during the latter half of 2011 for enterprises and individuals is also expected to take place during the session before it concludes on August 6. Proceedings will be aired live.
