(ĐN)- “Wildlife Protection” gala was held on May 9 in Bien Hoa city by Dong Nai provincial Party Committee and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

Mr. Scott Roberton, the WCSs manager, speaks at "Wildlife Protection" gala.

The event was attended by Mr. Huynh Van Toi, Head of Dong Nai provincial Department of Propaganda and Training, Mr. Scott Roberton, Chairman of the WCS, and representatives from departments, agencies and localities.

Dong Nai has made efforts to enhance measures to protect and develop forests over the past time and is considered as one of the provinces that have high forest coverage rates, said Mr. Huynh Van Toi. Dong Nai targets to raise the province’s forest coverage to 29,76% percent until 2015. Dong Nai Culture and Nature Reserve has been established on an area of more than 100,000 ha, with over 1400 species of plants and 1800 animal species, including many rare species such as elephant, bull, bear, etc.

However, Dong Nai’s wildlife protection activities are still facing difficulties because of illegal hunting and trading of wildlife. Some of the animals are destined for captivity as pets, while many others are eaten or used in traditional medicines.

At the event, Dong Nai signed a commitment with the WCS to prevent illegal wildlife hunting, transfer and trafficking. The music gala was held to further raise peoples awareness of wildlife protection.
