Top students at National Economics University in Ha Noi and University of Economics Da Nang will receive the prestigious 2007 BTEC Higher National Student Prizes sponsored by the International Edexcel United Kingdom.

Students Dang Ngoc Nga and Tran Thi Chau Giang were nominated for the awards by their lecturers who judged them to be the respective universities’ most outstanding BTEC Higher National Diploma students.

The students will receive cheques for US$1,000 each from Edexcel at an awards ceremony next week. The ceremony will also be attended by Edexcel Regional Director and Management Boards of the universities.

The annual awards are open to all BTEC Higher National Diploma students at local universities partnered with Edexcel in delivering the BTEC Higher National Diploma.

Ross Hall, Edexcel International Director said, "I am delighted to award the BTEC Higher National Student Prizes to these students in recognition of their achievements, and I wish them all the best in their future careers."

Speaking on behalf of one winner, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Do, National Economics University Ha Noi Vice Rector, said, "It is Ngoc Nga’s drive, determination and commitment to her studies and to her personal development that made her an obvious candidate for this award. She has the determination to succeed coupled with an ability to motivate and support others. I have found Nga a very personable and well-rounded student, one any university would be proud to have."

Ngoc Nga is currently in her final year of her BTEC Higher National Diploma at National Economics University. She will embark on a Bachelor Degree programme in the UK next year.

"I see a lot of differences while studying the British BTEC HND. What we study in the class actually reflects the real working world. This is definitely helpful and interesting, not just lectures, but learning and experiencing the actual business world by doing and practising."

BTEC Higher National Diplomas are awarded by Edexcel, one of the UK’s largest awarding bodies in the world. Edexcel offers an extensive range of vocational and academic qualifications including BTEC qualifications, National Vocational Qualifications, and GCE A levels.

The most popular subjects available in Viet Nam are Business, Banking and Finance, IT, and Engineering, all of which are being delivered at National Economics University Ha Noi, Banking Academy Ha Noi, University of Economics Da Nang, and University of Technical Education HCM City.

Other subjects with smaller numbers include hospitality, electronics, automation, and mechanics. They will soon be offered in collaboration with the Dong Nai People’s Committee.

Key industry players within the Dong Nai Industrial Zone will also be involved in providing on-the-job training to employees and students. This will help overcome the current highly skilled labour shortages and provide a meaningful bridge between education and employment.

"Viet Nam remains a country with low labour productivity within the ASEAN region. The systematic and planned development of the labour workforce will logically have a positive impact on economic growth in Dong Nai and Viet Nam," said Vo Thanh Lap, Director of Dong Nai Industrial Zone Authority.
