According to the document, the backward customs that should be eliminated include marriage of people below the minimum age at marriage prescribed by the Marriage and Family Law, forced marriages or obstruction of marriages due to superstition or ethnic and religious differences, and the marriage among relatives separated by four generations.
The new decree also bans outdated practices such as polygamy, marriage among people of the same direct bloodline or among relatives within three generations, and demands for a large number of wedding gifts.
The government told relevant ministries, sectors and People's Committees at all levels to work together with the Viet Nam Fatherland Front to build and implement policies and measures that will encourage people to follow the legal regulations on marriage and family.
They are also requested intensification of activities to popularise laws relating to this issue, thus helping people to promote good practices and abolish backward ones.
