From September 1, 2007, overseas Vietnamese and foreigners being spouses or children of Vietnamese citizens or overseas Vietnamese will be exempt from entry visa if their foreign passports or passport substitutes remain valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry.

According to this August 17 Decision, competent Vietnamese agencies, including overseas Vietnamese representations and the Public Security Ministry’s Exit and Entry Management Department, shall grant visa exemption papers within 7 working days from the date of receipt of a valid dossier.

A visa exemption paper is valid for up to 5 years and must be at least 6 months shorter than the remaining validity term of the related passport or permanent residence paper granted by a foreign country.

People entering Vietnam with visa exemption papers may stay in Vietnam for 90 days at most upon each entry. Otherwise, they shall carry out visa grant procedures according to current regulations before or after their entry into Vietnam.
