At present there are no novel coronavirus (COVID-19) patients in a critical condition nationwide, while there remains 50 active patients undergoing treatment across 12 medical facilities throughout the country, according to the Ministry of Health.

This comes after the Treatment Sub-Committee under the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control last week reported that there were three severe COVID-19 patients in the central city of Da Nang, who were old and suffering from long-term underlying health illnesses.

Due to these challenges in their treatment, each individual was at a high risk of "death at any time". However, by September 23 all three of the patients had repeatedly tested negative and were therefore declared to be free from the virus.

Dr. Le Duc Nhan, director of Da Nang Hospital, said on the morning of September 23 that all three of the patients had successfully recovered from the virus, although their underlying diseases means their current status remains severe. Due to this, the trio will continue to receive treatment for their ongoing health issues.

Furthermore, four critically ill patients undergoing treatment at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases have also made a recovery from the disease and have been therefore been judged to be out of danger.

Dr. Pham Van Phuc from the Department of Active Rehabilitation of the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said the number of patients during the second wave of the pandemic was less than the first wave, although the progress of the disease can be judged to be similar.

In addition, doctors accumulated plenty of experience in treating COVID-19 during the first wave, therefore serving to reduce pressure during the treatment process, Dr. Phuc noted.

According to him, critically ill patients are now free from COVID-19, although they have not yet fully recovered. After being discharged from hospital, they still require family care and will be subject to a 14-day quarantine period. Due to this it is essential to limit contact or not let relatives visit them if they are sick, while increasing their nutritional supplements and physical exercises.

In total, the nation has recorded a total of 1,068 COVID-19 patients, of which 980 have been released from hospital, with 35 passing away due to the virus, whilst a further three severe cases have tested negative for the virus multiple times.

Of the 50 patients currently receiving treatment across 12 medical facilities, 11 have tested negative once, two have tested negative twice, whilst 12 have tested negative three times. Most notably, two thirds of patients undergoing treatment are showing no symptoms, while some are merely displaying signs of mild illness.
