Localities across the country have been called upon to take necessary preventive measures to combat the spread of dengue fever and reduce the number of fatalities caused by the disease, said Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien during a conference in HCM City on July 19.
During the first half of the year, the southern province of Dong Nai recorded 5,093 cases of dengue fever, a 2.6-fold increase on-year.
Minister Tien underlined the importance of limiting the number of infected cases in order to reduce the number of fatalities and effectively stamp out dengue fever nationwide.
In addition to this, Minister Tien also emphasised the need to raise public awareness about cleaning their water containers regularly and stopping pools of water from building up.
She also warned of a serious patient overload occurring at central hospitals such as the HCM City Tropical Hospital and the city’s children hospitals as most cases of dengue fever could be treated at local hospitals and clinics.
According to the Ministry of Health, the disease will continue to spread throughout the southern and central highlands regions with high population density.
The ministry has also requested that localities launch campaigns instructing residents to take preventive measures against dengue fever and eradicate any mosquito larvae discovered in the home between now and the end of the year.
Furthermore, hospitals should identify patients who are able to receive treatment at smaller practices in order to avoid an overload at central hospitals, thus reducing the number of fatalities.
