(ĐN) – Dong Nai provincial People’s Committee on Feb 24 announced that the Zika outbreak at the communal level in the province ended.
Director Bach Thai Binh of Dong Nai Preventive Medicine Center said the control and eradication of Zika virus at Vinh Thanh commune, Nhon Trach district has been successful, with no new cases of the virus found since January end.
The outbreak has been controlled in a short time thanks to the strong and clear leadership of local authorities, Department of Health (DoH) and the whole political system. After the first case of Zika virus discovered, the DoH asked localities to closely monitor the epidemic situation while boosting environmental sanitation and killing mosquito larvae in residential areas, step up communications to raise public awareness of preventive measures.
According to health ministry regulations, a Zika outbreak is declared over when there are no further cases within 24 days of the last patient started showing Zika symptoms.
However, the province also made it clear that the area will be monitored and called for people and relevant organizations to stay vigilant in mosquito-fighting efforts.
So far, seven Zika cases have been reported in Dong Nai province’s Bien Hoa city and districts of Nhon Trach and Thong Nhat.
The Zika virus is caused by a virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes. Zika infection during pregnancy may lead to microcephaly in children, which is responsible for incomplete brain development and an unusually small head.
