Tran Thi Thu Ha, 31, is being treated at Cho Ray Hospital, HCM City.
Ha was blinded in both eyes after a complication from a brain tumour surgery when she was 18 years old. At that time, her mother had to sell all of their rice fields and borrowed from neighbours to pay for her surgery.
She then married Phan Thanh Son, who is blind in one eye and has weak eyesight on the other. As both families are poor, the couple have no one to depend on and opened a massage service for the blind. Their service only has a few customers on lucky days.

When Ha was carrying her first child, the intraventricular catheter in her skull was clogged and doctors had to carry out urgent surgery to save both mother and child.
The family owes tens of millions of VND to their neighbours after two operations. Ha's mother has to wake up at 3am to pick vegetables for traders and collect scrap for additional income. When Ha accidentally had a second child, she was determined to keep the baby despite warnings. As a result, her intraventricular catheter continued to be clogged and threatens her life.

Dr. Tran Kim Tuyen from Cho Ray Hospital said the intraventricular catheter had clogged four times and each time they had to operate to change the catheter and decided to change its position.
"However, 10 days later, the patient had high fever, suffering from sepsis with multi-drug resistant bacteria. We had to return the catheter to previous position but the patient fell into coma. The treatment is very difficult and costly," she said.
As of now, the hospital charge has gone up to VND300m (USD13,000).
Ha's husband said they had insurance but there were a lot of additional expenses. "Now we don't have anything left. We can't borrow anymore. Thanks to the neighbours that our children still have something to eat," he said.
