(ĐN)- Director Huynh Minh Hoan of Dong Nai Health Department chaired a meeting on March 10 to discuss measures to fight dengue fever and protect against Zika virus.
Vietnam has so far recorded no cases related to Zika virus. However, there is a high risk that the virus may enter and spread through the country due to trade and tourism connections with many Zika -hit nations.
Zika is mainly transmitted through the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which also carries dengue fever. The virus has been linked to microcephaly, a condition that causes babies to be born with unusually small heads and, in the vast majority of cases, brain damage. Currently there is no vaccine or specific medicine to treat Zika.
As such, an anti-mosquito campaign urging each individual to adopt self-protection measures will be launched this month.
The provincial Department of Health also instructed health care facilities at all levels to take measures to constrain the growth of mosquitoes in a bid prevent the spread of dengue fever as well as Zika in the community.
Localities have been urged to keep residential areas clean and securely cover all containers of water to prevent mosquitoes from entering them and laying eggs.
