(ĐN) - On March 30, Dong Nai Department of Health launched a campaign to call for locals to eliminate mosquito larva in their homes to fight dengue fever and Zika virus.
More than 1,300 cases of dengue fever including three deaths have been reported in Dong Nai from early this year until now, making the province one of the localities hardest hit by the disease.
Vietnam has so far recorded no cases related to Zika virus. However, there is a high risk that the virus may enter and spread through the country due to trade and tourism connections with many Zika -hit nations.
Zika is mainly transmitted through the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which also carries dengue fever. Currently there is no vaccine or specific medicine to treat Zika and dengue fever.
Accordingly, localities have been urged to keep residential areas clean and securely cover all containers of water to prevent mosquitoes from entering them and laying eggs.
The department will continue to enhance communication campaigns to raise public awareness of the danger of the diseases and precautionary measures.
