The selected baby is Nguyen Thi Thuy Dung, a female baby born at 2:45 am at the Central Obstetrics Hospital in Hanoi, according to an announcement issued by the General Office of Population and Family Planning at 5:45 am this morning.

The baby weighed 3.2 kg at birth and is the second child of Le Thi Duyen and her husband Nguyen Van Dung, of Nam Sach District, northern Hai Duong Province.

Earlier in Lam Dong central highlands province, a male baby was born to an ethnic minority couple at 0:05am.

In Hue central province, three babies including two males and one female were born concurrently at 0:00 am at the Hue central hospital for Obstetrics and Gynecology.

In Ho Chi Minh City, a 4kg baby boy was delivered at 0:15am at Tu Du maternity hospital. Two other babies were born at 0:00am at Hung Vuong hospital.

According to a previous forecast released following a general population census conducted in 1989, the country’s population would reach 90 in 2002 and 105 million in 2010. That means Vietnam will reach 90 million 11 years later than it was forecast.

“This performance is thanks to efforts to reduce birth rates properly by the country in the past years,” Duong Quoc Trong, head of the agency, told Tuoi Tre.

Vietnam is the 14th most populous country in the world and the third in Southeast Asia and with this rank Vietnam is “a powerful country in terms of population,” Trong added.
