Lu Van Trieu, 24, from Hamlet 1, Xuan Tay commune was diagnosed with thrombocytopenia when he was 14. To get money for his treatment, Trieu’s family has sold nearly everything they have.
When they could longer afford treatment in 2012, they were forced to keep him at home, as his body deteriorated. Several lesions have appeared, and the last resort was for his father to cut them off himself to prevent their spread.
Trieu's story attracted attention after it was published on Dantri. "Even some readers living overseas have called to share feelings with us. It has been a long time since we've had occasion to feel such joy. Human kindness is a truly amazing thing," Trieu's mother said.
Luong Ngoc Khue, Director of Department of Medical Service Administration, under Ministry of Health, also directed the Dong Nai Province Department of Health to treat Trieu and on August 2, Trieu was transferred to Hematology Department of Cho Ray Hospital.

On the same day, the deputy director of Cho Ray Hospital Tran Quyet Tien visited Trieu along with DTiNews reporters and granted the family VND199.550.000, all donated by readers. Tien said that the doctors and medical staff of the hospital will do their utmost to cure Trieu.
Dr Le Phuoc Dam from Hematology Department said, "Though Trieu received treatment for thrombocytopenia, lesions have developed all over his body. He also suffers from hepatitis B and diabetes. However his platelet count has remained normal. We haven't done enough tests yet to be sure that thrombocytopenia is the sole cause of his skin problems."
Dam went on to say that the hospital will priotise treatment for hepatitis B and diabetes while collaborating with the local dermatology hospital to carry out more exact diagnosis for skin lesions.
Trieu's family hopes he will be cured
"We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the readers of DTiNews. We believe that one day Trieu will be completely cured and it will be a result of your help. Our hope and trust is now in the hands of those at the hospital who care for him," Trieu's family said.
