Father of a young man from Dong Nai Province, who suffers from thrombocytopenia, is trying to lengthen his life by cutting off rotten pieces off his body.
Trieu’s father compelled to cut off rotten pieces on his son’s body to prolong his life |
Lu Van Trieu, 24, from Hamlet 1, Xuan Tay Commune was diagnosed with thrombocytopenia when he was 14. Instead of going to school like his friends, Trieu was sent to hospital for medical care.
In order to get money for his treatment, Trieu’s family has sold everything they have including furniture, rice fields, land and even their house. However, all their efforts do not make sense when Trieu’s situation, rather than improving, has only gotten worse.
“We can’t stand seeing our son being bedridden, we decided to sell our house and rice fields in 2009 to get VND200 million (USD9,507) for his treatment. We hoped he would recover but instead we've been really disappointed,” Lu Van Binh, Trieu’s father said.
Now that the family can no longer afford treatment, they have been compelled to keep him at home for the last 9 months where he receives no medical care at all.
As he doesn’t get sufficient medicine his body has started to break up. There have recently appeared several injuries on his body, forcing his father to cut off the rotten pieces to prevent the injuries from deteriorating further.
Trieu’s body is seriously injured by the disease due to the lack of medical treatment.
“It takes us at least VND30 million (USD1,426) per month to provide Trieu with medical treatment at the HCM City-based Cho Ray Hospital. It’s really out of our reach as now we’re struggling to survive and just afford to buy kapok to clean my son’s injuries,” the father said.
Trieu’s four brothers and sisters have all got married but are still trying to earn a living, so they can’t provide them much help.
Apart from Trieu, his family still has to take care of his 93-year-old grandmother who suffers from heart disease.
Nguyen Van Toan, head of Hamlet 1, said," As Trieu’s family has devoted all they have to provide him with medical treatment, they’re now living in the house of a relative."
His parents have spent most of their time taking care of the boy, they don’t have time or the strength to work to earn a living. Now they’re living on thin rice gruel and are in desperate need of help to survive the challenging period ahead.
