The world’s cutting-edge research projects on genetic and immunotherapy were introduced to Vietnamese scientists and physicians at the first ever Vietnam Gene and Immunotherapy Conference in Ho Chi Minh City on March 21-22.
The projects are expected to be harnessed by Vietnamese physicians for treatment of gene-related diseases, including cancer, which was said to take the lives of as many as 70 percent of the sufferers.
The participation of 300 scientists and doctors from 11 countries around the world also brought in a pool of experience in the field that Vietnamese physicians can explore to develop genetic and immunotherapies to cure cancer.
At the event, scientific research works on cell immunotherapy in cancer, optical imaging techniques for cancer and DNA vaccine to treat chronic hepatitis B virus and others were presented.
The World Cancer Research Fund predicts that around 21 million people across the globe will suffer from cancer by 2030.
In Vietnam, cancer cases are estimated at 150,000 in 2013.
