The Ministry of Health has instructed health departments in all provinces and cities to strengthen inspection of health clinics providing abortion services, the Department of Mother-Child Health said Saturday.

The move has been made due to the increase of abortions and maternity accident rates.

Local health departments have been asked to step up inspecting operation of health clinics, especially private establishments, and strictly handle violations.

The Department of Mother-Child Health said that local authorities have recently examined and uncovered some health clinics, most of which are private ones, perform unsafe abortions leading to severe accidents.

According to the Vietnam Family Planning Association, Vietnam ranks first in Southeast Asian and fifth in the world in the number of young people at the age of 15-19 having an abortion.

The country records 300,000 abortions annually. Of these, 22 percent is carried out on young people. Several of them had more than one abortion.
