Nguyen Duy Khe, Head of the Ministry's Department of Maternity and Infant Care, said three task forces have been dispatched to Hung Yen, Quang Ngai, and Dong Nai Provinces – where some of the fatalities occurred – to find out the causes.
They would next visit the other three provinces as well as several others, he said. There would be no cover-ups if violations were discovered, Khe added.
People are looking forward to the inspectors' reports and forensic examinations to know what have happened, he said.
They will also examine the quality and availability of obstetrics medical staff, facilities and emergency obstetrics treatment procedures at health centres at all levels.
Since April 20 there have been 20 deaths in 12 cases of unexplained obstetric complications around the country. In eight instances both mother and baby died, while in the others three mothers and an infant died.
Meanwhile, a medical committee formed by Tu Du Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital in HCM City has released its findings on the death of a 37-year-old-woman who died after childbirth.
The woman, who gave birth a week before her death, died on Tuesday at Cho Ray Hospital.
Bui Le Bao Dung had first been a patient at Tu Du Hospital from May 16-21, according to Dr. Le Quang Thanh, deputy general director of Tu Du Hospital.
The hospital's medical committee concluded that Dung had had no symptoms of puerperal infections, which could lead to fatal obstetric complications. It said acute liver failure was the main reason for Dung's death.
Dung also suffered from opportunistic infections, according to the committee, adding that the sources of the infections remained unknown.
