Dong Nai has more than 7,875 medical staffs including 1,439 doctors, an average of 5.5 doctors per 10,000 residents. In 2011, the sector attracted 489 medical cadres at university and post-university levels. However, the sector is still lack of around 200 doctors and 100 pharmacists.
In order to reach the target of 8.8 doctors per 10,000 residents in 2015, the health sector will need more 1,000 doctors, 200 pharmacists and 3,000 nurses.
At the meeting, the hospitals leaders expressed their difficulties in attracting professional doctors and lacking of budget for modern medical equipments. Low salaries and pressure at work had made it difficult for the hospitals to recruit new doctors over the last years.
Addressing at the meeting, Secretary Tran Dinh Thanh praised the health sector’s efforts in training medical human resources to meet the healthcare demand of local people. He also stressed that the sector should continue to implement measures to improve workforce quality. Accordingly, it needs to create favorable conditions for doctors and nurses to take part in training courses to improve their skills, issue preferential policies as well as pay more attention to the working environment and medical staffs’ expectations and desires so that they could be devoted to their work.
It was also necessary to offer tuition support to students who promise to work at local hospitals after graduation.
