Tips on vegetables and fruits that help control weight or fight obesity

Intake of foods containing too much proteins, fats and carbohydrates forces the liver and the kidneys to work harder, causing the body to be tired and easy to gain unexpected weights. This is why you should have an appropriate daily regime, with foods that has lower contents of proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

You should have more fresh vegetables and fruits for your daily meals. It is better to have more steamed or boiled foods than grilled or fried ones, as this will help ease the burden for the digestive system, the liver and the kidneys. Following are some recommended vegetables and fruits that can help either prevent weight gain or lose unexpected weights.

Amaranth, popularly known as rau dn in Vietnamese, is very good for the liver and urination, and can be used to refresh the body. Be it red or green, the amaranth has abundant vitamins A, B2, C and P, and potassium, which are good for those with cardiovascular diseases. Regular intake of amaranth can help lower high blood pressure and high cholesterol level in the blood.

Cabbage supplies the body with low calories. However, this leafy green vegetable is rich in dietary fiber. It is very good for those with obesity because it can help reduce the absorption of sugars and carbohydrates of the body.

Intake of jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana), called táo ta in Vietnamese, can help relieve hunger quickly, stabilize the blood sugar and burn extra fats in the body. It is better for those with obesity to eat the jujube with its rind because the rind has abundant dietary fiber.

Cauliflower has plenty of essential vitamins and phosphorus, especially the green species. Regular intake of cauliflowers can help prevent weight gain and lower high blood pressure and high cholesterol level in the blood. The vegetable can also help detoxify the body and boost the immune system.

Celery (Apium graveolens), called rau cn or cn tây in Vietnamese, is rich in necessary vitamins and minerals and is thus very good for those with high blood pressure and/or obesity. Intake of celery is highly recommended to lower the cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood, and reduce high blood pressure.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus), called da leo or da chut in Vietnamese, contains a very small amount of sugar and calories but high contents of vitamins A and C. As cucumber has a high volume of water, it is a refreshing fruit that can help quench the thirst quickly and relieve fever. The flavonoids in cucumber inhibit the metabolism of carbohydrates into fats in the body, thus it can help prevent obesity.

C sn (or c u), also known as Mexican yam or Mexican turnip (Pachyrhizus erosus), has a high content of water but a small amount of fats, proteins and calories. Intake of this tuberous root can help lose weights effectively.

Last but not least, intake of pomelos, which are widely grown in southern Vietnam, is highly recommended to fight obesity and fatty liver, and lower the cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood.
