Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is widely grown throughout Vietnam as an ornamental plant as well as for food and medicinal herbs. Lotus leaves are often used as a fragrant wrap for rice dishes. Lotus flowers are indispensable offerings in most religious ceremonies and have long been used to perfume tea.

Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is widely grown throughout Vietnam as an ornamental plant as well as for food and medicinal herbs. Lotus leaves are often used as a fragrant wrap for rice dishes. Lotus flowers are indispensable offerings in most religious ceremonies and have long been used to perfume tea. Its rootlets and rhizomes are the major ingredient for various types of salads. The seeds are prepared into preserves, sweet soups or porridge, or cooked or steamed with chicken, duck, fish, pork or beef.

Fresh lotus leaves are often used to relieve sunstroke: Wash the leaves and crush them; add a little salt to the juice and drink the solution. Lotus leaves are also used to cure nasal bleeding or bleeding due to hemorrhoids: Roast the leaves well and boil the roasted leaves; drink the broth during the day until the bleeding stops. The seedpods are often dried, minced and roasted. Dissolve these roasted stuffs with water and drink the solution to stop bleeding, relieve indigestion and cure hemorrhoids and diabetes.

Lotus seeds are rich in carbohydrates, sugars, fatty acids, amino acids, proteins, calcium, phosphorus and iron. The seeds are very good for the heart, spleen, kidneys, digestive system and appetite. Intake of lotus seeds, either raw or cooked, has been proven to help treat malnutrition for children, sleeplessness and dysentery, and strengthen the spleen, stomach and men’s sexuality.

The bitter germs of the lotus seeds have long been used as a restorative tisane, a beverage to treat sleeplessness and lower high blood pressure. Soak the dried germs with boiling water and drink the broth during the day to refresh the body and relieve sunstroke. Or, drink it before bedtime as a tranquilizer.
