Smart factory models promoted for furniture industry

On May 14, the International Labour Organization (ILO), in coordination with the Dong Nai Wood and Handicraft Association (DOWA), organized a workshop titled “Smart factory models for the furniture manufacturing industry,” attracting the participation of 45 wood-processing enterprises and DOWA members.

At the workshop, representatives of ITG Technology, the project’s consulting and implementation partner, shared digital transformation roadmaps and lessons from practical operations at enterprises currently implementing the process. Representatives of Tan Vinh Cuu JSC (TAVICO) also discussed the difficulties and obstacles encountered in implementing digital transformation in factories, especially among small- and medium-sized enterprises.

The workshop also allowed speakers and member businesses in the wood industry to discuss the urgency of digital transformation, suitable roadmaps and steps, and ways to address obstacles and issues arising during the transition. Accordingly, digital transformation is becoming a required condition for manufacturing enterprises to improve their competitiveness, rather than merely an experimental trend. Enterprises do not need to invest in large-scale systems immediately. Meanwhile, they can begin with small steps, identify the right problems to solve, and implement transformation according to a scientific roadmap, while also preparing the human resources needed to operate the systems, a decisive factor.

Representatives of the ILO affirmed that Vietnam’s position among the world’s top five wood exporters serves as a “springboard” for the country’s furniture industry to improve its standing in the global value chain. However, amid growing pressure over delivery timelines and production efficiency, manual operating methods have reached their limits in terms of supply capacity. Mastering data flows from design to on-site execution is considered a strategic step for Vietnamese wood enterprises, in general, and Dong Nai-based firms in particular, to optimize operations, improve productivity, and enhance business efficiency.
