The draw placed Vietnam’s No.1 Nguyen Thuy Linh ( ranked 22nd in the world) against former World No.1 Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand (ranked 10 in the world), in the first round of the women’s singles event at the 2025 World Badminton Championships which took place on the evening of August 25 in Paris, France.
Entering the match, Thuy Linh showed confidence, employing a steady game with sharp variations and precise finishes that forced Intanon into difficult positions and extensive movement. This allowed the Dong Nai-born player to seize decisive points and close out the first game with a 21-17 victory.
Boosted in spirit, Thuy Linh maintained her good performance in the second game despite Intanon’s determined effort to level the match. With smart shot placement and dynamic rallies, Thuy Linh continued to make her Thai opponent cover more ground and expend extra energy. The two battled point-for-point before Thuy Linh surged ahead with a 4-point run (18-14), ultimately sealing the game 21-18 and completing a straight-sets 2-0 victory.
This marks the second time in her career that Nguyen Thuy Linh has defeated Ratchanok Intanon. Most recently, in January 2024, the 27-year-old badminton player from Dong Nai overcame the 30-year-old Thai star, who won the women’s singles world title in 2013, also by a 2-0 scoreline.
With this victory, Nguyen Thuy Linh advances to face Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland (world No.31) in the second round of the women’s singles category at the World Badminton Championships.
