2022 was considered a successful year for the Vietnamese women's football team as they earned a historic place at the 2023 World Cup for the very first time following their spectacular performance at the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in India. They also successfully defended their championship title at SEA Games 2022 after beating rivals Thailand in the final.
Despite these notable victories, the women's national team still suffered setbacks after losing 4-3 to Myanmar in the third-place playoff of the AFF Women's Cup in Manila, the Philippines, in July, forcing them to return home empty-handed.
In Asia, the team are ranked in sixth place behind the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Japan, Australia, China, and the Republic of Korea.
The United States women’s national football team continue to lead the FIFA rankings, followed by Germany, Sweden, England, France, and Canada.
