Vietnamese swimmers qualify for world championships

Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang has qualified for the upcoming International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Championships Budapest 2022 which is set to get underway in Hungary from June 18 to July 3.

Hoang qualified with A and B standard results based on his excellent performance at the recent 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) that helped send him directly to the Hungary competition.

The 22-year-old swimmer earned an A standard in the men's 400m and 1500m freestyle and B standard in the 200m freestyle, 800m freestyle, and 200m butterfly competitions.

All of his teammates in the national swimming team reached B standard and will also compete in the global tournament. They are Tran Hung Nguyen in the men’s 400m freestyle, 200m backstroke, 400m medley, and 200m medley; Pham Thanh Bao in the women’s 200m and 100m breaststroke; Le Thi My Thao in the women’s 200m butterfly, Hoang Quy Phuoc in the men’s 100m freestyle, and Tran Tan Trieu in the men’s 1500m, 800m, 400m freestyle, and 400m medley.

The SEA Games 31 running from May 12 to May 23 saw the Vietnamese swimming team finish second with a haul of 11 gold, 11 silver, and three bronze medals. The local swimmers also broke four SEA Games records.

Singapore’s swimmers topped the medal tally with 21 golds, 11 silvers, and 12 bronzes.
