Overcoming many strong rivals in the competition, Minh earned eight points after nine rounds to win the medal. The Vietnamese team have also scored gold medals in both team and individual events in age groups of U.8, U.12 and U16 for girls.
The tournament attracted nearly 1,000 chess players from countries in East Asia and Vietnam. The championships took place between September 24 and 26.
