Vietnam’s U16 football team has been drawn in Group H along with Australia, Timor Leste, Mongolia, and Macau for the qualification stage of the 2020 AFC U-16 Championships.

The draw was held at a ceremony hosted by the Asian Football Federation (AFC) in Kuala Lumpur on May 9.

Vietnam will also host matches in Group H during the tournament.

The draw presents a tough task for Vietnam’s U16s as they will face a number of tough games, particularly against Australia.

The qualifiers will see a total of 47 teams participate from across Asia. Due to the size of the region, the qualifiers have been split between West Asia, which has six groups, and East Asia which has five groups.

The matches are set to take place from September 14-22.

The 11 group winners along with the four best second-placed teams shall qualify to the finals which will take place in Singapore in 2020. Singapore will automatically qualify as hosts.

In 2018, Vietnam’s U16 team successfully qualified for the final round of the tournament in India. However, the team bowed out of the championship after failure to beat Iran and India.

In addition, the AFC also announced that Vietnam will be in Group J with Mongolia, Guam, and Japan for the qualifying round of the 2020 AFC U19 Championship. Group J matches will take place in Vietnam between November 2 and November 10.
